Solar Power and Your Business: 3 Things to Consider

Eco-conscious business owners the world over have been finding solutions to reduce their environmental impact. One significant step businesses can take towards sustainability is by utilizing clean energy.

Many people wonder why more businesses don't have solar power. Figuring out where solar is a good fit is my job. Consider these three things if you are interested in using the sun's energy to power your business.

Who Owns the Building?

Do you own a commercial building, apartment complex, or rental house? Are you a tenant in a commercial building? In many cases, the tenant is interested in solar power, but the landlord must be the one to order the contract.

There is also a 26% tax credit for businesses utilizing solar energy through the end of 2020, but only the owner of the building would benefit. The tax credit may be an incentive if you are looking to get your landlord interested in solar power.

Billing

Billing by utility companies is often different for commercial vs residential properties. It is important to know how installing solar power will affect your utility bill. Plus, it can work to your advantage but is important to address as part of the consulting process.

Structure

It is crucial to assess the structure itself where the solar panels would be installed. Many commercial buildings have flat roofs. A flat roof can support solar panels, but it would most likely necessitate using tilted racking. Tilted racks will need to be screwed into the structure of the building itself or ballasted with weights. Together with my engineers, we will determine the best method for installation.

Conclusion

While there are certain factors to consider, it is often more beneficial financially to utilize solar energy for your commercial building. There are other benefits to choosing solar too including reducing water scarcity, curbing pollution, mitigating climate change, and promoting better health outcomes.
